Here is today's Crypto Brief for Friday August 14th. The biggest policy development is a setback for U.S. crypto rulemaking. The Securities and Exchange Commission has canceled its open meeting that was expected to unveil Regulation Crypto, a long-awaited framework that could have offered an “innovation exemption” for tokenization and certain digital-asset activity. CoinDesk reports the proposal has been postponed without a new date, amid concerns from Wall Street and the White House. For an industry seeking clear operating rules, the delay prolongs uncertainty—even as major financial firms continue building onchain products. [1]
Markets are reacting to a tougher macro backdrop. Bitcoin has slipped below 63,000 dollars, wiping out last week’s gains, as oil and bond yields rose and the latest U.S. inflation data failed to trigger a rally. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs posted 131 million dollars in net outflows yesterday, their second consecutive day of withdrawals. Ether and XRP funds, however, registered modest inflows. The split suggests investors are reducing broad Bitcoin risk while still selectively testing other crypto exposures. [2]
Institutional adoption is continuing through indirect routes. Today, Norway’s 1.4-trillion-dollar sovereign wealth fund disclosed an 81.9-million-dollar position in BitMine, a company that gives it indirect exposure to roughly 5.8 million Ether. Separately, South Korea’s 96-billion-dollar Shinhan Asset Management signed an agreement with Plume to test a won-denominated tokenized fund, modeled in part on BlackRock’s BUIDL. These are still early initiatives, but they show that tokenization is advancing across both public markets and traditional asset management. [3]
Finally, index provider MSCI has proposed excluding broadly defined “non-operating companies” from global indexes—a screen that could remove Bitcoin treasury firms Strategy and Metaplanet. The consultation runs through September, with a decision due in October. It could matter because index exclusion can force passive funds to sell, creating a new risk for companies whose valuations are closely tied to crypto holdings. [4]
The key trend is a growing divide: institutions are steadily adopting tokenization and crypto exposure, but market conditions and regulatory delays are making the path less direct and more selective. Thank you for listening to Crypto Brief from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow! [5]
