Here is today's Google Daily for Monday September 28th. Yesterday, Google AI Studio leader Logan Kilpatrick offered a notable forecast for the next phase of AI: he expects 2027 to be the year autonomous, revenue-generating agents—or what he called “mini-companies”—begin operating at scale. He stressed that versions already exist today, but remain small-scale and rough around the edges. [1]
That is not a Google product announcement, but it is a useful signal from a leader closely involved in Gemini’s developer ecosystem. The idea is that AI will increasingly move beyond answering questions or drafting material and instead carry out longer business processes: researching leads, managing campaigns, handling support tasks, writing and testing software, or coordinating routine operations. The major distinction is accountability. An assistant can suggest a next step; an autonomous agent may take it. [2]
For companies, the near-term opportunity is not to hand over entire departments to AI. It is to identify contained, measurable workflows where an agent can operate with clear permissions, spending limits, approval checkpoints, audit trails, and a human owner. The organizations that benefit first will likely be those with clean data, well-defined processes, and realistic benchmarks for cost, quality, speed, and error rates.
Google’s recent Gemini releases provide some of the building blocks for that direction: multimodal models, live audio, connected apps, background tool use, and stronger coding capabilities. But combining capabilities is much easier than building dependable autonomy. Agents need access to systems and information, which raises risks around privacy, security, incorrect actions, and unclear responsibility when something goes wrong.
So the trend to watch is a shift from AI as an interface to AI as an operator. The competitive edge will not come just from more capable models. It will come from trustworthy systems that can act across real workflows while keeping people firmly in control of important decisions.
