Washington Brief July 22: Trump’s Iran War Faces Funding Fight as MAGA Support Sours

Here is today's Washington Brief for Wednesday July 22nd. The Iran war is now becoming a funding and coalition problem for the White House. The Hill reports Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s latest hearing showed a tough fight ahead for an Iran war supplemental, while Politico reports Trump’s MAGA base is souring on the conflict. Hegseth said yesterday that Iran has been weakened, but he would not give senators a timeline for the war’s end. That combination — no clear endpoint, new money needed, and growing conservative media unease — is turning the war-powers debate into a broader political liability. [1]

On Capitol Hill, Republicans are still trying to move budget and security bills before the next shutdown fight fully arrives. The House passed a stopgap funding measure yesterday, months ahead of the deadline, but Politico reports this morning that GOP defectors are already threatening a budget-plan vote. Separately, a Republican border bill cleared a hurdle despite Democratic efforts to add guardrails on ICE and DHS.
