Space Daily August 14: Blue Origin Expands Cape Pad as Intuitive Machines Wins GEO Contract

SpaceNews also reports that Intuitive Machines has won a contract for three geostationary-orbit satellites. The award broadens the company’s business beyond its high-profile lunar work and underscores the continued value of GEO, where a satellite remains over the same part of Earth. In defense-space news, the U.S. Space Force has awarded five companies a combined $60 million for tests of multi-vendor satellite networks. SpaceNews reports today that Astranis has unveiled a geostationary surveillance satellite, extending the company’s ambitions beyond its better-known communications spacecraft. A satellite in geostationary orbit can maintain a continuous view of a broad region, making the concept relevant for persistent monitoring and national-security missions. The announcement reflects growing interest in using smaller, commercially developed satellite platforms for missions once associated mainly with large, bespoke government systems. [1]

Virgin Galactic has pushed the return of commercial suborbital flights into 2027. The company says its first new ship is now expected to enter service in February, rather than late this year, to allow more time for avionics and systems installation. Virgin says its roughly $750,000-per-seat flights are oversubscribed and sold out, so demand is not the stated issue. But the delay again shows how difficult it is to turn a new human-spaceflight vehicle into a reliable commercial operation, particularly when safety-critical systems must be completed and certified. Yesterday, the U.S. Space Force ordered two additional Impulse Space vehicles for maneuvering demonstrations. The contracts point toward an operational need for spacecraft able to move through orbit, reposition payloads, and potentially support inspection or other responsive missions. It is another sign that military space planning is shifting from satellites designed largely to stay in one assigned orbit toward systems with greater mobility and flexibility. [3]

There is also a reminder that changing exploration plans carry consequences on the ground. SpaceNews reports that Paragon has laid off staff following the cancellation of NASA’s lunar Gateway program. The company had work tied to the station, and the layoffs show that program changes affect not only spacecraft designs but specialized suppliers and skilled workforces. While Gateway-related technology may find a role in future lunar efforts, that transition is not automatic. [4]

Here is today's Space Daily for Tuesday August 11th. Japan added a new navigation satellite to orbit yesterday, as an H3 rocket lifted off from Tanegashima Space Center carrying Michibiki 7. The satellite joins Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System, which supplements GPS coverage with signals optimized for the Asia-Pacific region. Navigation constellations are increasingly essential infrastructure: beyond consumer positioning, they support aviation, shipping, emergency response, precision agriculture, and national-security operations. The H3 success is also another important operational milestone for Japan’s newer launch vehicle as it builds a more regular flight record.

Rocket Lab, meanwhile, says the odds of a first launch of its medium-lift Neutron rocket before year’s end are narrowing, raising the prospect that the debut could slip into 2027. That is a meaningful revision for a vehicle intended to compete for commercial and national-security missions beyond Electron’s small-launch class. The company is still making development progress, but Neutron illustrates the gap between advancing hardware and reaching a credible first-flight date. Even so, customer interest remains visible: Kepler Communications has booked Neutron for a 2028 optical-relay mission. Rocket Lab is also developing deployable infrastructure for Electron launches, a sign it is investing not only in rockets but in the ability to operate them flexibly from different locations. [1]

At SpaceX’s Starbase, preparations continue for Starship Flight 14. Here is today's Space Daily for Thursday August 6th. Rocket Lab has successfully launched the eighth satellite for Japan’s iQPS Earth-observation constellation. Both SpaceNews and NASASpaceflight reported the Electron mission’s success this morning. iQPS is building a radar-imaging network designed to observe Earth regardless of cloud cover or darkness, a capability valuable for disaster response, maritime monitoring, and commercial intelligence. For Rocket Lab, the launch adds another proof point for Electron as a dependable small-satellite launcher operating at regular cadence. [1]

Also today, Chinese launch startup Orienspace announced new funding for its reusable Gravity-2 rocket while targeting an initial public offering. The company has already flown its smaller Gravity-1 vehicle, and its next step is a more capable launcher built around reusability. The news shows that the push to lower launch costs is no longer confined to American companies. That distinction matters: an engine problem can affect multiple launch programs, but the scope of the issue may be narrower than first feared. Finally, NASA and Roscosmos are continuing their seat-barter agreement for International Space Station missions. Here is today's Space Daily for Wednesday August 5th. SpaceX launched another Falcon 9 mission early this morning, carrying the Bluebird 11 through 13 satellites from Cape Canaveral. NASASpaceflight reports the mission used booster B1077 on its thirtieth flight, another example of Falcon 9’s increasingly routine reuse. The launch is notable not only for the payload, but for the operational maturity behind it: a booster flying thirty times would once have been a remarkable milestone, and is now becoming part of the normal launch rhythm. In commercial space infrastructure, Neuraspace has raised 18 million dollars to expand what it calls sovereign space awareness. The company works on monitoring activity in orbit, a field becoming more urgent as constellations multiply and governments seek independent visibility into potential collisions, interference, and other threats.
