Gaming Pulse August 14: Netflix Shutters Oxenfree Studio Night School, Shifts Gaming Strategy
Created: August 14th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Friday August 14th. Netflix has shut down Night School Studio, the developer behind the beloved narrative adventure Oxenfree, as well as Moonloot Games. The company is reportedly shifting its gaming strategy toward party games played on TVs, rather than the prestige, story-focused titles that Night School represented. It is a disappointing end for a studio Netflix once called a key part of its gaming ambitions, and another sign that subscription companies are narrowing their bets toward formats that can reach the broadest possible audience. [1]

Today, 2K Sports has raised the prospect of a serious new challenger to EA Sports FC. The publisher has established a new studio to develop what it calls its “next blockbuster sports franchise.” It has not confirmed a football game, but the timing and language have naturally fueled that expectation. EA’s series remains dominant after its split from FIFA, yet a well-funded rival could finally pressure it on licensing, modes, and annual-release pricing. [2]

There is an urgent preservation deadline for Pokémon players. The Pokémon Company says Pokémon Bank will close on February 25th, 2027, leaving fewer than 200 days for players to transfer collections from the 3DS service into Pokémon Home. Once Bank goes offline, creatures still stored there may become inaccessible. If you have old teams or rare event Pokémon sitting on a 3DS, this is a practical reminder to check the transfer process well before the deadline. [3]

Insomniac also clarified today that Marvel’s Wolverine will be fully playable from its PlayStation 5 disc when it launches September 15th. There will still be a day-one patch, but no mandatory download simply to start playing. That reassurance carries extra weight as Sony moves toward ending physical discs for new releases in 2028. [4]

Finally, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls appears to have sold nearly half a million copies in its first week, despite its launch-day PC performance issues. Strong early demand, plus improving technical support, suggests the fighting game has room to build a lasting community. [5]

The connecting trend is ownership and access: studios are being reshaped around platform priorities, while players are increasingly watching how their games, saves, and physical purchases will survive the next business decision. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow! [6]

Gaming Pulse August 13: Twitch Trains Amazon AI on Streamers’ Content by Default
Created: August 13th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Thursday August 13th. Twitch is facing a fresh backlash after confirming it uses livestream content to train Amazon’s AI models unless creators opt out. Eurogamer reports that the setting is buried in the platform’s controls, and Twitch acknowledged that an opt-in system would draw little participation. For streamers, the concern is straightforward: their broadcasts, voices, gameplay, and communities may help train commercial AI by default. This is another major platform choosing convenience and data access over a clearly informed consent process. [1]

The AI argument has also escalated at Saber Interactive. Following criticism over alleged ChatGPT use in Rideshare Stimulator and claims from a former writer that she was replaced, Saber says it will add an AI disclosure to the game’s Steam page. But chief executive Matthew Karch intensified the dispute by saying he would have been happy to replace the writer with AI. The label is a practical concession, yet the public response risks doing more reputational damage than the missing disclosure itself. [2]

Yesterday, Relic delayed Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 by roughly two and a half months. It now launches December 3rd, moving out of September’s crowded release window, while buyers of the Commander Edition will receive earlier access. The studio says the delay will give it more time to refine the experience. It is a familiar explanation, but the timing may be smart: strategy games benefit enormously from a stable launch and a player base that can grow together. [3]

There is brighter news for subscription players. Sony’s August PlayStation Plus Game Catalog is led by Helldivers 2, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Vampire Survivors, alongside Metro Exodus, Onimusha, and more. Helldivers 2 arrives as its Devoid of Liberty update lands, giving Sony a chance to funnel Extra and Premium members into an active live-service game. [4]

The wider trend is accountability. Creators want meaningful control over AI use, players want clarity about how games are made, and publishers are leaning on delays and subscriptions to protect launches and sustain audiences. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow! [5]

Gaming Pulse August 12: Amazon Hands Lost Ark West to Smilegate as Helldivers 2 Expands
Created: August 12th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Wednesday August 12th. Amazon is stepping back from operating Lost Ark in the West, but the MMO is not shutting down. Eurogamer reports that Smilegate, the game’s original developer, will take over the Western servers as Amazon retreats from MMO development. The handover should reassure existing players, though the real test will be whether Smilegate can maintain updates, community support, and the localized service standards players have come to expect. It is another reminder that live-service games can outlast their publishing arrangements, but transitions are rarely frictionless. [1]

Helldivers 2 has a substantial new update today. Arrowhead is adding more Illuminate enemies, a new biome packed with hazards, and a higher level cap, alongside a broader batch of changes. For a game built around its evolving galactic war, fresh enemies and terrain matter more than simple balance tweaks: they give veteran squads new problems to solve and create reasons for lapsed players to return. [2]

At Bethesda, an internal Elder Scrolls VI preview for Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma was overshadowed by a labor protest. Bethesda staff placed a giant inflatable rat outside the Rockville office while Xbox leadership visited to see the game, with the union action aimed at Microsoft’s recent mass layoffs. Sharma later said the upcoming RPG looks “incredible,” but the image of a major franchise demonstration taking place alongside employee protest captures the uncomfortable tension inside Xbox: its biggest future games are progressing, while the people making them remain anxious about the company’s direction. [3]

Finally, two very different sales stories underline gaming’s enormous range. Meccha Chameleon has reportedly sold 20 million copies in just two months, while Halo: Campaign Evolved has struggled to find a substantial audience, with Eurogamer pointing to its lack of multiplayer as a likely factor. A familiar name alone is no longer enough; players increasingly expect a package that matches how they remember and play a franchise. [4]

The trend is clear: games now need long-term stewardship, whether that means operating an MMO through a publisher change, continually refreshing a live service, or meeting community expectations around legacy series. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow! [5]

Gaming Pulse August 11: Alan Wake 2 Hits 3 Million as GTA 6 Ultimate Leads Preorders
Created: August 11th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Tuesday August 11th. Remedy has a clear sales milestone to celebrate: Alan Wake 2 has now passed 3 million copies sold worldwide. The psychological horror sequel took time to reach profitability, but its continued momentum gives Remedy a stronger foundation as it bets heavily on its next major project, Control Resonant. It is a reminder that distinctive single-player games can still build audiences steadily after launch, rather than needing to deliver all their commercial value in week one. [1]

Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders are also revealing how comfortable players may be with premium pricing. Take-Two says the standard edition may not cost 100 dollars, but most customers pre-ordering so far are choosing the 100-dollar Ultimate Edition. That is a striking signal ahead of the game’s August 27th extended look: for the industry’s biggest release, a large segment of the audience appears willing to pay more for early access or extras. [2]

There is better news for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls on PC. A new patch has reportedly sharply reduced CPU usage and stuttering, addressing the severe performance issues that made its launch weekend so rough that prominent fighting-game streamer Maximilian Dood uninstalled it live on stream. The speed of the fix matters, but the episode shows how fragile player confidence can be when a competitive game launches poorly on PC. [3]

Finally, Big Walk, the cooperative hangout puzzler from Untitled Goose Game developer House House, has sold more than 1 million copies in less than a week. Its success suggests there is still major demand for smaller, social games built around talking, exploring, and creating memorable moments with friends. [4]

The bigger trend is a split market: blockbuster audiences are accepting premium editions, while players are also rewarding unusual, lower-priced multiplayer experiences. In both cases, strong communities and post-launch execution are becoming just as important as the initial release. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow! [5]

Gaming Pulse August 10: Xbox Adds Australia Age Checks as Take-Two Defends Digital-Only GTA 6
Created: August 10th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Monday August 10th. Xbox players in Australia now face age verification before they can access games rated 18 and over on the Xbox and Microsoft Stores. Existing purchases and downloads will remain available, but Microsoft is moving ahead of a September 9th deadline under Australian online-safety rules, where noncompliance could bring a substantial fine. It is a regional change for now, but it is another sign that platform storefronts are becoming more tightly connected to real-world identity and regulatory requirements. [1]

The Division Resurgence, Ubisoft’s free-to-play mobile spin-off, has now appeared on Steam—and the reception is confused and unhappy. Eurogamer reports players are questioning why a game designed around mobile-style progression and monetization is arriving on PC, with early user reviews reflecting that skepticism. The release shows publishers still see Steam as a valuable audience for mobile-originated live-service games, but PC players remain quick to reject experiences that feel built first around mobile conventions. [2]

Microsoft also has a bright spot in its studio portfolio. Blizzard is reportedly its top-performing studio, driven largely by Diablo 4 and Overwatch. That result underlines the value of established, continuously updated franchises at a time when the wider Xbox business has faced restructuring questions. For Microsoft, durable live-service communities are proving especially important—not only for game sales, but for subscriptions, seasonal spending, and keeping players inside its ecosystem. [3]

Finally, Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick is defending Grand Theft Auto 6’s digital-only release, arguing that physical discs no longer make much sense for consumers of huge games. That stance arrives as GTA 6 pre-orders are reportedly off to an exceptional start, and as the game’s August 27th Netflix extended look approaches. The commercial confidence is obvious, but so is the divide between publishers pursuing digital convenience and players who still want ownership, resale, and preservation options. [4]

The through-line is control: regulators want safer access, platforms want verified users, publishers want recurring digital revenue, and players want fewer barriers and more lasting ownership. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow!

Gaming Pulse August 9: Activision’s Black Ops 1 and 2 Ports Sell 11 Million
Created: August 9th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Sunday August 9th. Microsoft may be positioning Xbox as the unexpected defender of physical games. Digital Foundry sources, reported by IGN, say the company intends to keep supporting game discs in its next hardware generation, with backward compatibility a priority. Microsoft has not confirmed the plan, so treat it as a report rather than a promise. But after concern over PlayStation’s increasingly all-digital direction, the signal matters: physical media may yet remain a differentiator for Xbox rather than a legacy feature it quietly abandons. [1]

There is a huge sales result for Activision’s revived classics. Eurogamer reports the new PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 sold more than 11 million copies in less than a month. That is an extraordinary response for older games, and evidence that players will still show up in force for accessible, well-known back catalogs. It also strengthens the case for publishers to keep revisiting older multiplayer communities instead of focusing entirely on new releases. [2]

Pokémon Pokopia received its free 2.0 update today, adding underwater diving, ocean biomes, house-building, and significantly more customization. The update addresses the game’s limited world scope by opening up another layer of exploration, while its shared storage improvements should reduce a major frustration for players managing materials. Nintendo’s cozy Pokémon experiment is becoming a more substantial long-term game through free post-launch support. [3]

Finally, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has stumbled out of the gate on Steam. Players have pushed its user rating down to a mixed 44 percent, citing PlayStation account requirements, anti-cheat issues, and launch problems. Arc System Works has responded, but the rough PC debut is a reminder that cross-platform launches need more than a strong fighting-game pedigree and Marvel characters. [4]

The wider pattern is clear: publishers are increasingly finding value in their libraries and long-running games, whether through ports, backward compatibility, or major updates. But as games reach more platforms, execution matters just as much as access. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow! [5]

Gaming Pulse August 8: Palworld Mobile, Stalker 2 Chornobyl Expansion, Square Enix AI Controversy
Created: August 8th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Saturday August 8th. Palworld is making a major move to mobile. Palworld Online, an officially licensed MMORPG for iOS and Android, was announced today and is due later this year. The original game made its name through survival crafting and monster collecting on PC and consoles; an always-online mobile version signals an effort to turn that breakout hit into a durable, service-driven franchise. The biggest unanswered questions are how closely it will resemble the original and how aggressively it will monetize. [1]

Stalker 2 is also preparing to open one of its most iconic locations. Today, Eurogamer shared a first look at the Cost of Hope expansion, which will finally let players enter the Chornobyl Power Plant. That location is central to the series’ identity, so this is more than another map addition. It gives developer GSC Game World a high-profile opportunity to extend Stalker 2’s world and bring players back with a setting the franchise has long made feel mysterious and dangerous. [2]

Square Enix has finally responded to accusations that AI-generated artwork appeared in the Kingdom Hearts Collection, two months after players raised the issue. The delayed response keeps the spotlight on a debate that is not going away: players increasingly expect publishers to clearly explain how AI is used in remasters, promotional material, and game production. Silence can quickly become as damaging as the original controversy. [3]

And Nintendo is drawing a clear contrast with PlayStation’s digital-first direction. The company says physical games still account for 38.5 percent of its software sales, suggesting it has little appetite to abandon cartridges soon. That matters as players continue to worry about disc production ending elsewhere and what digital-only futures mean for ownership. [4]

The broad trend is that gaming is expanding in two directions at once: publishers want always-online, mobile, and streaming-friendly businesses, while players are asking for transparency and the security of physical ownership. The companies that manage both sides well may earn a meaningful advantage. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow! [5]

Gaming Pulse August 7: GTA 6 Extended Look Trailer Set for Netflix Debut
Created: August 7th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Friday August 7th. Rockstar and Take-Two have put a date on Grand Theft Auto 6’s next major reveal. An “extended look” trailer will debut first on Netflix on Thursday, August 27th, at 3 PM Eastern, or 8 PM in the UK. Yesterday’s news established that Netflix would host the presentation; today’s update makes the event feel much more real. With GTA 6 still gaming’s biggest looming release, expect every frame to be examined for gameplay, story clues, and any hint about the launch schedule. [1]

There is also a significant preservation story brewing around physical games. Eurogamer reports Sony appears to be adding labels to PS5 console boxes warning buyers that disc production is ending, while IGN says Microsoft’s plans for disc support on its next-generation Project Helix console are now unclear following its recent business reset. Neither company has offered the kind of long-term ownership guarantees physical-media fans want, and the contrast is striking: the industry is still selling premium hardware while making the future of the discs people own feel increasingly uncertain. [2]

On the game side, Game Freak has promised quick fixes for Beast of Reincarnation after its mixed launch reception. The studio says patches will arrive within a week for its ambitious big-budget action RPG. Reviews this week recognized compelling combat and traversal, but also highlighted rough edges. A rapid response could be important for Game Freak as it tries to prove it can build a major non-Pokémon franchise. [3]

And Quake turns 30 with a worthwhile gift: yesterday, id Software and MachineGames released Dawn of the Machine, a free 19-map expansion for the 2021 remaster across platforms. It includes a new campaign, soundtrack, secrets, hub area, and deathmatch map—an unusually generous way to celebrate a foundational shooter. [4]

The larger pattern is that game companies are balancing anticipation and legacy in very different ways: Netflix-sized marketing for new blockbusters, quick patches for risky new projects, and meaningful new content for classics. But physical ownership remains the unresolved question hanging over all of it. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow! [5]

Gaming Pulse August 6: GTA 6 Extended Look Heads to Netflix as Halo Faces Layoffs
Created: August 6th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Thursday August 6th. Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix later this month. Details are still limited, including exactly what the presentation will contain, but the choice of Netflix is the headline: gaming’s most anticipated release is using a global streaming platform, not simply a conventional trailer drop, to build its next wave of attention. Expect intense scrutiny of every frame, and probably renewed speculation about GTA 6’s launch plans. [1]

There is harsher news at Halo Studios, which appears to have been hit by layoffs just one week after Halo: Campaign Evolved released. The reported cuts are another difficult reminder that shipping a major game is no longer reliable protection from restructuring. With EA’s acquisition and expected job reductions already dominating this week’s conversation, Halo adds to the sense that even cornerstone franchises are not insulated from the industry’s continuing cost-cutting cycle. [2]

Roblox is facing a different kind of pressure. Eurogamer reports player numbers continue to fall, alongside a sharp decline in the company’s stock price. Kotaku says Roblox lost nine billion dollars in market value in a single day after acknowledging it was directing fewer children toward viral games built around short-term monetization. That suggests the company is trying to balance growth, safety, and engagement—but changing the incentives of a massive creator ecosystem can be financially painful. [3]

Finally, Minecraft is coming to Switch 2 on October 27th. Microsoft says existing Switch owners will have a digital upgrade path, though details are still to come. It is a significant addition for Nintendo’s newer system, but it also arrives as reports point to Diablo 4 potentially coming to Switch 2 next month in a code-in-a-box physical release. [4]

The wider trend is that access is becoming increasingly complicated. Big games are reaching players through streaming showcases, upgrades, subscriptions, and digital codes, while physical media continues to recede. Meanwhile, platform holders and publishers are still under pressure to prove that growth strategies do not come at the expense of jobs, trust, or player ownership. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow!

Gaming Pulse August 5: Saudi PIF, Silver Lake, Kushner Complete $55B EA Takeover
Created: August 5th, 2026 - 05:10 PT
Script

Here is today's Gaming Pulse for Wednesday August 5th. Electronic Arts officially changed hands late last night, completing its 55-billion-dollar take-private acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, private-equity firm Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners. It is the second-largest deal in gaming history, and reports from Eurogamer and Kotaku say major layoffs are expected. EA now takes its huge sports, Battlefield, Apex Legends, and mobile businesses out of public markets at a moment when the industry is already struggling with job cuts. The immediate question is whether private ownership gives EA more room to invest—or intensifies pressure to cut costs quickly. [1]

Yesterday’s Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Direct gave Nintendo’s next Switch 2 exclusive a much fuller introduction ahead of its September 17th launch. The 20-minute showcase outlined a continent-spanning story and the series’ strategy combat in greater detail, while Kotaku highlights some notably unusual additions for Fire Emblem, including firearms. Nintendo has been on a strong run, and Fortune’s Weave looks positioned as an important test of whether it can keep a steady stream of distinct exclusives flowing after the Switch 2 launch period. [2]

Capcom also has an early signal of major demand: the upcoming Resident Evil Veronica remake has passed two million wishlists across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Switch 2 before release. That is a striking milestone for a remake of Code: Veronica, and it reinforces how much commercial value Capcom continues to find in revisiting Resident Evil’s older catalog. [3]

Finally, storage is becoming a real part of the platform conversation. Final Fantasy 14’s new Switch 2 free trial requires 117 gigabytes of available space, while Marvel Rivals’ next update will substantially reduce its install size across PC and consoles. With game libraries expanding and hardware costs still rising, file size optimization may increasingly become a competitive advantage. [4]

The trend is consolidation alongside catalog management: publishers are seeking scale, while players are being asked to manage larger games, evolving platforms, and fewer guarantees about the people who make them. Thank you for listening to Gaming Pulse from The Daily FM. See you tomorrow!
